We were up early and on the road by 7:45. Rick drove the first half (to Port Alberni) and we spotted a black bear on a stony river bank as we flew past with no place to stop and take photos.
| We had plenty of time so stopped at Cathedral Grove again |
| and it was still peaceful, |
| impressive |
| and photos can't do it justice. |
| We were at the ferry terminal near Nanaimo with time to spare. |
| Watched ours arrive and the one to Gabriola Island cross. |
| This was our fourth ferry ride on this trip and the biggest ferry yet. |
| We stayed on deck for the whole 2 hour trip, so many whale plumes that I lost count. I would see a plume, get the binoculars focused just in time to see its back and then it was gone. Rick and I both thought we saw white on the sides of a couple so they may have been Orcas but the rest were definitely Humpbacks. |
| The Comfort Inn Airport Hotel was a lousy hotel (tiny room, lousy breakfast, stained carpets and curtains) but it backed onto a lovely park and we must have been in Chinatown because that is all we heard spoken. |
| There was also an unlimited number of Chinese restaurants to choose from. This was the closest to the hotel |
| and it was excellent, with a waiter who was passionate about the difference in Shanghai cuisine, guiding us in our selection. |
The next morning we caught our Porter flight, Vancouver to Hamilton, without any problems and I was home and in my own bed that night!
