Merida Day 20 - Museo de la Cuidad

Mum and Dad left early for their tour to Chichen Itza. It is 6:30 and they are not back yet, they'll be bushed. We had a slow start to the morning as it is cool and cloudy so no need to beat the heat. By cool I mean about 22. We bused down to Centro and walked the couple of blocks to the Museo de la Cuidad (City Museum) which is in the lovely old Post Office Building.
In the front foyer you can clearly see the beautiful tile floors and
period lighting that is throughout the building.
We had seen one room when we were there before so decided to just do the other 2 rooms on the ground floor, anticipating we will be going back with Mum and Dad. One was devoted to Paseo Montejo with a model of the street, historic pictures and explanations of the origins, architectural style and current usage of the main buildings. Unfortunately all the signage in here was in Spanish only.
Model of Paseo Montejo, complete with street lighting.
The other ground floor room had displays on the building and development of the city, its population, architectural style and the arts and had some English explanations.

We left to go to Restaurante Mary where we had a couple of Sols with botanas and 2 other yucatan dishes we had yet to try - bistac yucatan (thin beef done in red spices, but not too hot, which came with salad, rice and tortillas) and pescado enspenada (breaded and fried fish with salad and rice). Both were delicious and while there we observed that we got some rather strange looks - not aggressive looks, just looks that were curious, "What are you doing there?" looks, somewhat amused looks. We realised that very few non Mexicans venture South of the Plaza and those that do are on the way to the bus station, passing through, not eating in a comina economica.
On the way back to the bus stop we passed a store that sold the most amazing dresses.
Had everything from wedding dresses to christening dresses - beaded,
pleated, ruffled, flowered etc.
Another had an amazing array of high heeled shoes. It amazes me how women can walk around the city, and around the archaeological sites, in these shoes, but they do.

The shop made me think of Chris because she loves the high heeled "clubbing" shoes and also recently wrote a blog post about her love for cheap ballet flats. I had to take a picture of the selection of those, all for under 140M$ a pair.

We had some grocery shopping to do so we asked, where the bus lets us off, how to get to WalMart. We were told to get on the bus that we always use from home. So we did and found that the other half of its route takes it out to the West side of the city where there are 2 large mall areas - Plaza Las Americanas and Plaza Dorado - and another WalMart. So we shopped and caught the bus back. Realised that we no longer have to walk 16 blocks to go shopping at WalMart!
Trio of black dogs sleeping in the WalMart parking lot, struck me as cute.
Our plan tonight was to go to Parque Santiago to see the Big Band again but that will depend on how pooped Mum and Dad are.
