We went off exploring to the East today, A book of New Brunswick Hikes was the impetus.
2 peninsula's over was Blacks Harbour and the ferry to Grand Manan. That is not why we were here. There was a short hike listed (1.4km) to Pea Point Lighthouse.
A short walk through some woods took us to this beach and the tide was way out
which meant we could scramble up wet, slippery, seaweedy rocks to get on the Pea Point Lighthouse Island.
Not a particularly attractive lighthouse but it does the job
and the location is still fabulous.
Clambering again off the island
we took the other section of the loop walk which involved slipping, climbing and generally negotiating rock and pebble beaches (scenic but hard on the hips), We decided it was the most strenuous of our hikes so far.
and then into the woods. It felt like a lot more than 1.4km.
It was 25 degrees, sunny and beautiful but that made for a sweaty walk. We drove further East for our next walk, also in the hiking book: New River.
New River Beach was a surprise, it is the first true sand beach I have seen here and huge, with the tide out.
We sat in the sun, marveling at our luck with the weather, and ate our picnic.
Nowhere near the same effort here. Much of this 7km hike was on boardwalks, protecting the often boggy environment from the constant foot traffic.
This walk was from
rocky cove
to cove
to cove
to cove.
Most of them had benches to sit and contemplate the beauty.
Rick wandered down and looked for life in the tidal pools.
As we neared the farthest point
we could hear the clanging of the navigational buoy
and could see that the tide was changing.
Played with the sparkling water setting and
some splash photography.
The return was through a boggy section
but the environment was perfect for fungi and
the shoreline sections had some flowers,
berries and
wild roses.
When we got back to the start, the tide had obliterated much of that huge beach.
The sun setting and lighting up Minister's Island.
