Crete - Rethymno, looking for Carnival

I had asked about Carnival in Rethymno on Facebook and received a reply that it was on the weekend of the 17/18th. So, not really thinking, we went looking for Carnival.

A Sunday morning and not much traffic. Stores are not open here on Sundays (like" the good old days"). Cafes, restaurants and convenience stores are.

Public water source. I was struck by the Arabic script.

Statue on the edge of the Old Town, Rick tried google translate but it couldn't give us his name.

These, life sized puppets look like they belong to Carnival

as does this store window.

We were now in the vicinity of the parade route and saw no signs of preparations.

The more we talked about it, the more we realized that it is probably in March, not February.

Oh well, it had been a good walk and now we were at the long stretch of beach at the east end of Rethymno.

Walked back through

the marina.

A huge area compared to the original, Venetian, harbour.

The "pirate ship" waiting for its load of summer tourists.

Fishermen selling

right at the dock

and readying nets.

The Dolphin has the teeth of a shark??

The Terns were fishing too. I did a Google search and I think this is a Sandwich Tern (which I had never heard of before but it has the dark bill with a yellow tip, black legs and black crest)

I sat on a bench in the sun and started sketching but the shade caught up with me (and the cool) so I will go back and finish it later.

The Old Town was busy with people as it is pedestrian only on Sundays

groups of kids, in matching t-shirts, were racing around, on a religious based scavenger hunt. We saw a group talking, and getting their required hint from, this costumed participant.

We stopped in again at Othanas Taverna for a lighter lunch, just 2 mezes this time, wine and the free soup and apricot cheesecake.

They are starting to get ready

for Carnival.

In the road
