Actually set an alarm today as we had heard there was a market in Valdemossa on Thursdays and wanted to get there in good time. I took lots of pictures today so am going to separate them into two blog posts.
Looking back down towards Soller. We took the mountain road but it was a grey day which has rather washed out the pictures. |
The road was twisty and turny with hairpin bends, which was fine until there was a bus, a car cutting the corner |
or bicyclists. |
We did have a couple of heart rate increase incidents, both with buses coming in the opposite direction.
Once through the pass from Soller the road followed the coast with breathtaking homes hanging on the edge. |
Bus shelter. Public buses do this route very regularly. |
We parked on the outskirts of Deia and walked in to the village with its church on the top of the hill, overlooking the Med.
We walked up steep roads and steep steps. |
Everywhere we looked there were stone buildings, colourful shutters, cute patios, |
old olive trees |
and scattered around the village; tiled stations of the cross. |
Finally, at the top of the hill, the church. |
Inside it was cool and dark with a recording of hymns being played. At the far side of the church was this model with the nativity in the foreground and the village of Deia in the background. |
The cemetery, beside the church, sits on the top of the hill, overlooking the sea and the valleys on both sides. |
The church from the cemetery. |
We took a different way back down, this time facing the Tramuntana mountains. |
Many of the old tile roofs had rocks on them so the wind wont blow the tiles off. |
Eve suggested I might want to rent here next year but I wouldn't want to have to deal with that mountain road any time I wanted to leave. I would certainly have to learn how to use the buses. |
Snoozing on a patio. |
Back in the car, we continued on the mountain road to Valdemossa.
